Detailed description of Kings Mill Golf Club

Kings Mill Golf Club is a Public 18 hole golf course located in Waldo, Ohio. Originally settled by Titus King in 1830, King constructed a mill in near Waldo. 130 years later, John and Jean Russell purchased the land to be used as a golf course, they name the property Kings Mill Golf Club.

The front nine was built in 1965 and opened on Memorial Day 1966. The front nine was designed by Jack Kidwell. The back nine opened in 1973, The back nine holes were designed by John Russell and Ted Cox.

Par for the course is 70. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,156 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 5,373 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 2, a par-5 that plays to 517 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 8, a par-3 that plays to 137 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 9, a 409-yard par-4 challenge, and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 8, a 137 yard par-3.

The course is nestled along the Olentangy River. The terrain ranges from hilly to flat and rolling. The front nine is more open than the back nine and has several sand bunkers in the design. The back nine is tighter with a lot of trees and water, but no bunkers. Water hazards (ponds and a creek) come into play on at least six holes in all. Shot accuracy is essential because many holes are bordered by out-of-bounds stakes.

Heading out East and this is my first stop to play a 1965 Jack Kidwell designed layout. What I didn't plan on was Mother Nature dropping 3" of rain last night that soften up my 9:30am tee off plans and the course likewise. This course is two (2) different layouts with the Front 9 moving among scattered trees and a slightly straightaway rolling layout. With the Back 9 drifting through rolling wooded areas with water appearing on your last seven (7) holes, adding to the challenge. I played "Walking" only the Front 9 today at 3,109yd / Par 35 because the Back 9 at 3,047yds / Par 35 was closed because of flooding. The #1 Par 4 is a 375yd tree lined fairway is just straightaway to a large front trapped protected green on this Hcp 3 hole. The #2 Par 5 at 517yds throws a bottle neck fairway at 200-230yds with matching sand traps 12-15yds apart on this narrow squeeze. IF your 2nd shot catches the down slope about 130-150yds out from the green (on a dry day) this can be a very easy 3rd shot. The #3 downhill Par 3 at 175yds is the photo shown above with any long/side missed shots OB road/creek or one of the four (4) sand traps. The #4 is a 353yd dogleg left Par 4 that needs a righthand center fairway drive for good angle to hit this tucked green with the creek on its LH and backside. The #5 has a uphill green on this 334yd with two (2) hidden traps framing the front, so go a little deeper than you think. The #6 Par 4 at 428yds has another fairway squeeze around 200-230yds out and plays uphill to a tougher that its Hcp 13 rating, especially with wet conditions. The #7 Par 4 plays downhill at 381yds but theres a hidden RH pond lurking 230-250yds with a large fairway tree on the other side blocking the green, stay on LH side. The #9 Par 4 is a long uphill 409yd climb to protect its Hcp 1 ranking and with todays soft conditions, bogey was acceptable. You can tell that this is a well maintained track and my rating would easily be higher in normal dry seasonal conditions. Worth the close highway stop as $30 18/cart is a great price for this 6,156yd / 68.1 / 106 Par 35/35 layout.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
